2015 Photo a Day Set 5

Week 5 already.  Where has January gone?  That means I’m now 1/12 of the way through (if you look at this in month terms) or 8.7% if I look at it as 32/365 days.

A quick review before I start on the images.  Am I enjoying the challenge – yes, I most definitely am.  I’m learning that I like close-up shots as they are easier than landscapes for the way my brain works, that I’m not very confident at photographing people (unless it’s my niece who I am just fascinated by) and that I don’t really know how to work my camera very well.  It’s also making me take a step back and although I’m not able to get out every day, there’s lots of small wonders just in the house and garden to be photographed and I’m enjoying thinking about suitable subjects each day.

In terms of actual photography – I’m getting to grips better with the exposure triangle and have found the image from Knitting Butterflies (who is actually a photographer) very useful as a reminder when I get it wrong.  I’m referring back to a book on the camera on how to do things and since finding the zoom in the viewfinder for manual focus am starting to try and focus more manually as well.

The standard (as in always on) lens on the camera is my 18 mm f2 (equivalent 27 mm) which is fabby and is what I use for the majority of the photos.  That said, I absolutely love using the 60 mm f2.4 (equivalent 90 mm) but it’s heavier for me to carry so doesn’t get lugged about as I need to be careful with weight and when you have your work bag with heavy laptop, any weight saving is handy.   In the past week I’ve even dug out the daddy of my lenses … the 55-200 mm f3.5-4.8 (equivalent 84-305) for some zoom work.

What’s the plan for February – well, after today I’m going to start “shooting” (the photographer has told me this is what it’s called) in RAW format and I may attempt to try some of the Lightroom tutorials as well.  I don’t feel the need to try and set topics yet so I’m happy to see where each day takes me.

Right … onto the photos …. January 27th (as I included the 26th in the last set) was from my Tuesday dog walk.  The seed heads of some of the plants are lovely to see so I captured one of a teasel.

Day-27

Day 28 was a FO (finished object) photograph of a shawl, Colour Affection.  It was a pest to photograph not having a convenient model, the wind blowing it everywhere and I ended up using clothes pegs and taking that long that the sun had gone in.

Day-23Next was my one day out of my (home) office during the week.  I had a meeting over at one of the London Universities and my favourite thing when in the vicinity is to pop into the Science Museum for lunch.  On my way out, I spotted this horizontal steam engine looking majestic (and huge) so it became my photo for the 29th.

Day-29

The 30th I put on my zoom lens and went out to photograph the birds down by the local river as it’s really close to the house and the dog can enjoy herself on the fields so get exercise that way.   We have Swans, Moorhens, Egrets, Ducks, Crows, the local Buzzard pair, Pheasant, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Robin and many more.  How many did I see ….. well my photographic subject says it all really.  That said, I do love the tufty hair.

Day-30

January 31st and the end of the month I thought I’d try and do something a little special and photograph the moon.  This is something I’m going to have to come back to as it’s not right.  Zoom lens, manual shutter and manual focus, aperture set automatically by this lens (or I’ve not worked out how to change it) but I didn’t get focus quite right or there was some movement.   Will try again later in the year.   Instead … I went for a close up of a tomato

Day-30Day-30a

Last but not least is today.  Again I’m not doing a Sunday selfie.  However – it’s a Sunday snowdrop instead.  They’re out and beautiful and my husband has been sending txts with lots of them in so I thought I should look in our garden as we planted a lot of them.  I found the following ….

Day-31Now on to February and lets see what that brings :o)
